Overcoming the Fear of Asking for Referrals
Two of the main reasons why business people do not ask for referrals is that they feel that they are imposing on the other person and because they lack confidence. Both barriers can be overcome in two ways.
First, remind yourself that if you are good at what you do, receiving a referral from someone you know helps three people: the referrer, the referral, and you. The referrer is held in higher esteem for connecting the referral to you, the referral receives the benefit of your great service, and you reap the financial and professional benefits of helping someone new.
Second, remind yourself that you have a mission to help as many people as possible with your products and services and that it would be an injustice if you didn’t take every opportunity to help others by asking people you know for referrals. The bottom line is this: every time you don’t ask for a referral, you are leaving money on the table and someone who could really use your help will not receive it.
So ask for those referrals!
