Are You The Worst Boss You Ever Had?
When was the last time you took a vacation? Where you powered off the smart phone, disconnected from the internet, locked the office door behind you and went away. If it wasn’t within the past year, you might just be the worst boss you ever had. Employees get every weekend, plus stat holidays, plus at least two weeks of “compulsory” vacation for a total of 134 days. Yet every day I meet entrepreneurs who can’t, don’t or won’t take a single day away from the business, let alone a week.
It’s not because they love the work so much that they couldn’t bear to stop. It’s usually because they fear the business can’t function without them and even though there are delegated tasks, there’s just never enough time in the day to breathe, let alone rest. Their employees take vacations. But they do not.
Vacations are a critical part of success. The idea of recreation – kicking back and letting the problems rest for a while – is one of the most consistent characteristics of successful entrepreneurs. I know several successful entrepreneurs who manage to take 8 weeks of real vacation time every year. They come back refreshed, rejuvenated and reenergized to tackle problems with speed and efficiency they never imagined possible.
As you begin thinking about your business plan for next year ask yourself this question, “am I building an asset like an entrepreneur or is this just a job with the worst boss ever?” If you’d like to figure out how to make your business run without you turning the crank 24/7, shoot me an email and let’s talk.
