Telephone? I’d Rather Eat Worms!

Telephone? I’d Rather Eat Worms!

“Everybody hates me. Nobody likes me. I’m going to eat some worms”.  If that’s the childhood song that comes to mind when you’re looking at the telephone, you’re not alone. Fear of rejection is a major obstacle for many business owners and entrepreneurs.

What if they say no? What if they’re busy? What if they don’t need my product or service? Well in fact, chances are darn good that they’re going to say no. Or at least ‘not yet’. Or that they’re already buying your product or service elsewhere. Why would that surprise you? And why would you let it stop you?

The simple fact is that it takes an average of seven or eight contacts or ‘touches’ to break through to a potential new client.  You may call to introduce yourself, leave a voicemail, follow up with an email, follow up with a phone call, etc. But if you give up after the first voicemail (and the prospect doesn’t return your call) you might just have warmed up your prospect so that whoever calls next gets their business. And that could be your competitor if you don’t continue to follow up.

It sounds like a no-brainer, but often we give up and move on to the next opportunity rather than show persistence. Simple things like doing what you say you’re going to do may not close a sale, but failing to follow through is guaranteed to kill your chances.

The telephone is a proven method of generating new business. If you want to grow, you have to talk to clients, follow up with referrals, set appointments with prospects and generate good leads. The telephone allows you to identify solid targets, quickly generate interest in your products and services and easily develop a dialogue with people whose needs match what you have to offer.
